Last week we highlighted the dismissive, contemptuous attitude of many Scottish Labour MPs and MSPs to questions from their constituents, an approach perhaps borne of the safe seats occupied by most of those concerned. Vote Yes for social justice, fairness and equality
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Lynda Williamson)
4 Sep 2014 at 3:26pm

By Jeane Freeman

I GREW up supporting the Labour Party.† For a time, I was a Labour member and for four privileged years I worked for the party when it was in government at Holyrood.† What drew me to Labour politics were the values of social justice, fairness and equality.

And it is my continued belief in those values that leads me to support independence now, in 2014.

Lord George Robertson will kill Unionism stone-dead
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
5 Sep 2014 at 4:56pm

† By Alex Mooney

There is something deep in the human psyche that takes joy from mocking the little things in life.† City folk do it to town folk who do it to village folk.† Big football clubs' fans do it to smaller clubs' fans.†

The tall do it to the small.† Even big countries do it to tiny countries.† At its worst, it's cruel.† At its best, it's patronising.† But this superiority complex is always wrong.

City?s Verdict on Westminster Currency Threat: Don?t write cheques your arse ...
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
4 Sep 2014 at 11:17pm

By Mark McNaught

After 2 years of largely ignoring or laughing off the referendum, the City of London is finally waking up to the fact that the Scots will vote for independence. After all, who wouldn?t choose economic freedom? As with all things financial, they have no misty-eyed illusions of Scottish or British nationalism. They are looking at a bottom line, and Westminster?s bottom has suffered self-inflicted sodomy.

Much made over national security
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
2 Sep 2014 at 5:07pm

By George Kerevan

WITH barely two weeks to go before the independence referendum, the Yes campaign has finally acquired momentum.

The latest string of polls suggest it will take only a modest three-point swing to put the two sides on even keel ? no wonder David Cameron says he is nervous. The political mood feels very similar to the final weeks of the 2011 Holyrood election, when the optimism exuded by the SNP campaign caught the nation?s imagination.

The English View on Scottish Independence
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
3 Sep 2014 at 1:34am

† By Peter Geoghegan

"Independence will be good for Scotland, and it will be good for England," says an open letter penned by English Scots for Yes. The missive, launched at a low-key press conference at the CCA in Glasgow yesterday morning, went on to say that "yes voters in Scotland have no bitterness or resentment towards people in England."

Around 400,000 English-born people have come to live in Scotland since 1980s. In June, some of those founded English Scots for Yes to encourage their compatriots to vote for independence and to counter accusations that nationalists are inherently anti-English.

Illuminating the Future Potential from the North Sea
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
2 Sep 2014 at 11:38am

† By Professor Alex Kemp and Linda Stephen, University of Aberdeen

The current political debate has generated much heat surrounding the future of the North Sea oil and gas industry.† This piece attempts to shed light on the subject.†

The long term future of the industry depends on a combination of (1) the volume of the ultimate resources, including future discoveries, (2) the costs of exploiting these resources, and (3) Government policies (which can incentivise or retard exploration and developments).† An understanding of all of these is necessary to come to informed judgements about the long term potential.†

Why I will never buy the Herald again
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
1 Sep 2014 at 2:10pm

† By G.A.Ponsonby

I broke my self-imposed vow not to buy hard copy newspapers when the Sunday Herald came out in support of Yes.† Recent figures show that alone amongst a sea of pro-Union slippage, its sales have increased.

However that short excursion into the newsagents stopped abruptly today when I read the headline of a newspaper I purchased religiously every day for years.

Scotland: The Day after ... In Europe
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
31 Aug 2014 at 3:35pm

By Mark McNaught

The resignation of Douglas Carswell from his Clacton seat, defection from the Tories to UKIP, forcing a by-election, could very well bring a UKIP MP to Westminster. Others could follow before the 2015 UK elections.

This move has disastrous implications for David Cameron and his plans to renegotiate the terms of UK membership in the European Union.

The Dirty Dozen - The case against BBC Scotland: Part 2
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
30 Aug 2014 at 3:21pm

† By G.A.Ponsonby

In March this year Newsnet Scotland published an article which†challenged†the widely held belief that the BBC's reporting of the independence referendum could be trusted to be fair and balanced.

The article contained six of the worst examples of BBC political reporting in relation to Scotland and indicated a political agenda was at work.††Now, five months after its publication and three weeks before the referendum, we publish the second installment.

The meltdown of the No campaign ? The game that changed
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
30 Aug 2014 at 1:24am

† By G.A.Ponsonby

It's quite remarkable how fast it has happened.† Barely a week ago we were being told that the second TV debate was Alex Salmond's last chance to save Yes.

The First Minister had put in a below par performance in the previous TV debate on STV and pundits were queuing up to tell anyone who would listen that Yes needed a game changer.† No were hammering away on the currency and demanding a Plan B.
