Fallen far from the tree
by Rev. Stuart Campbell
27 Jun 2014 at 11:12am
So, this afternoon’s big story is that the son of Holocaust refugees (campaigning on the same side as Holocaust deniers), is threatening to put a whole race of people in a ghetto by building a barbed-wire fence and guard posts across their only land border? Have we got that right?

Crossing the floor
by David Barratt
27 Jun 2014 at 6:59am
Until relatively recently I was very firmly of the mind that Scotland shouldn?t be independent. Born in England to English parents but growing up in Scotland since I was a baby, I was English to the Scottish and Scottish to the English. I?ve always considered myself British and still do. Not in a nationalistic way, […]

You might be able to find fault with the Scottish tabloid media’s honesty, readers, but you can’t criticise its brevity. Take this page 2 piece from this morning’s Daily Record. And waiting on the […]

Do Unionists hate the English?
by Cath Ferguson
26 Jun 2014 at 7:13am
It?s becoming ever harder to keep track of the twists and turns of the No campaign on the thorny subject of immigration. First we have astroturfing groups urging us from London to ?Vote no borders?, and the Better Together narrative of “border posts at Berwick”. But then we?re offered the rather desperate spectacle of the fear […]

In 2009, nearing the end of my Masters degree in Scotland and with the UK recession in full swing, I decided to leave for New Zealand. Big beasts play the union jack card
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Lynda Williamson)
15 Jun 2014 at 10:05am

By Ken Ferguson

The 100-days until the referendum landmark has been punctuated by the appearance of that creature so beloved of mainstream political scribes, the Big Beast ? rather akin to Nessie at the start of the tourist season.
Like Nessie, this creature has a mythical status and, at least in the notebooks of those journalists who write what passes for political news, is rather fearsome.

The Nightmare after No
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
20 Jun 2014 at 12:09pm

The Yes campaign should be commended for maintaining a strong sense of positivity and vision in its quest to persuade Scots to vote Yes in September.

Activists have helped engage the undecided voters with thousands of events the length and breadth of Scotland, they field questions and provide answers.

Stand Up! Speak Up!
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
25 Jun 2014 at 1:09am

By Derek Bateman

Yet another community gathering to debate the referendum and no one from the No campaign present.

It really is well named No Thanks. Four times the people in the Borders made polite requests for a Better Together guest to represent the Unionist case in West Linton, four times they were ignored and eventually turned down. The explanation, after the rudeness, was that they only send speakers to events they themselves organise.

Iraq fires potential oil boom
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
25 Jun 2014 at 1:03am

By George Kerevan

How is the Iraq crisis affecting North Sea oil? Reminder: the UK Office for Budget Responsibility is using $100 a barrel as its reference for predicting the oil revenues until 2018-19.

So far, the markets haven?t been panicked by the capture of western Iraq by Sunni insurgents dominated by the Isis group. North Sea Brent crude jumped to a nine-month high of $115 a barrel on 19 June, after Isis seized control of Mosul.

Blinded by the Light
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
22 Jun 2014 at 5:13pm

By Derek Bateman

I fear there is an atmosphere being created in the media bubble which could have unforeseen consequences. The calculated smearing of Wings Over Scotland for example has developed into a witch-hunt, an idea given force by the reported attempt of Mike Dailly to compose a list of supporters for use by the mainstream media?whatever that means.

The Wee Ginger Care Fund
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
21 Jun 2014 at 4:51pm

The Wee Ginger Dug blog has rapidly become a favourite amongst independence supporters for its biting humour and snappy wit.  Updated almost daily, the blog provides an entertaining lift when the dream of Scottish independence comes under sustained attack from the negativity of the No campaign.

Paul Kavanagh, the ghost writer for the independence campaign's favourite Valencian mongrel, is also a long standing friend of Newsnet Scotland.

Classic Comedy
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
20 Jun 2014 at 1:07am

By Derek Bateman

W1A was the comedy based on the BBC in London. My old chums at BBC Scotland are clearly going for their own version ? PQ ? having screwed up their radio schedules to drop ? yet another ? popular programme and then replacing it by offering a contract to someone entirely unsuitable and then dropping her too.

That looks to me like making a big mistake first and then wheedling a way out. If this was Kezia?s idea to pull out, it doesn?t sound as if the BBC made herculean efforts to retain her. Put another way, it implies they?re happy to wash their hands of her, after realising too late that there?s, there?s?an election on.

We must win the indyref for ourselves
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Lynda Williamson)
15 Jun 2014 at 9:28am

By Jonathon Shafi

On recent mass canvases in Glasgow we have found there to be a very large number of undecideds. Scanning social media reports its seems to be the case that there remains a high number don't knows in places all over Scotland As a result many have asked why this is the case. Are there any particular issues? Is there anything we can change about our messaging? And so on.

John Finnie MSP calls for redoubling of effort to deliver the Yes message
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Lynda Williamson)
19 Jun 2014 at 4:56am

By John Finnie MSP

The quest to find a comparator for our constitutional debate invariably leads commentators to Quebec. Whilst the 1995 vote was narrowly lost 49.42 per cent Yes and 50.58 per cent No, the verdict of psephologists on the 1980 referendum was that the defeat was ?because a French-speaking politician (Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau) was able to return to his native land and appeal to his brethren.? Is such a turn of events likely with our debate?
