English votes for Scottish laws
by Rev. Stuart Campbell
11 Dec 2014 at 7:59am
On of our ever-alert agents uncovered this for us today. Published quietly last week by the House Of Commons Library and completely unremarked-upon by the Scottish media, it’s a document whose introductory text makes the relevant point concisely and eloquently without any need for elaboration or explanation on our part. “The impact of removing Scottish MPs from […]

The limits of ambition
by Rev. Stuart Campbell
11 Dec 2014 at 5:17am
Labour have already been widely derided for their feeble plan to increase the minimum wage to £8 by 2020 – a level likely to barely keep pace with inflation. But it turns out they’ve got a goal even more pathetic for people trying to survive on meagre incomes. The following extract comes from a piece on LabourList […]

The inconvenient truths

10 Dec 2014 at 10:03am
Today’s media is dominated by reports on the release by the US government of a deeply horrifying dossier admitting and detailing the massive scale of torture carried out by the CIA on often-innocent detainees during the USA’s “war on terror”. Why won?t he just die?

9 Dec 2014 at 8:57am
Alex Salmond as the Terminator. Any way you slice it it’s a remarkable mental image from the mind of a clearly distraught James Kirkup of the Telegraph. This is Tory activist Sarah Robb. She’s not a very nice person. (We don’t feel too bad about saying that, as she’s no fan of ours either.) The cream of the crop
by Rev. Stuart Campbell
8 Dec 2014 at 9:41am
With polls almost all predicting a hung parliament at next year’s UK general election, every seat counts. So the beleaguered Labour Party must have had hopes of securing a constituency like Gordon in Aberdeenshire. The Lib Dem incumbent Malcolm Bruce is stepping down, almost certainly taking his substantial personal vote with him, and the party’s choice of replacement, […]

The latest sales figures for newspapers in Scotland are out today, most of them showing the now-traditional hefty year-on-year declines. The best-laid plans

Social media has been alive in recent days with No voters concocting a fiendish plan to vote tactically against the SNP at next year’s general election. MP For Vendetta

7 Dec 2014 at 6:16am
We’ve noted on a number of occasions that the BBC is fond of using the late-night papers review show on the News channel as a sneaky little Nat-bashing section in which London-based broadsheet journalists (always, always Unionists) get to display the full depth of their arrogant cluelessness about Scottish politics. Last night’s, however, was quite […]

Why Britain shares America's torture shame
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
10 Dec 2014 at 2:26pm

Commentary by Derek Bateman

If America?s torture regime was shameful, as even their allies claim, how much of that shame is shared by the UK?

From the handwringing and teeth-sucking there is a cloud of hypocrisy rising from those who prefer not to interfere in the United States? actions and, if necessary, will participate in it, but then pretend ignorance.

At every level the orchestrated state torture of individuals, illegal and unconstitutional, is massaged by the guilty into self-serving convenience. So the President can shake his head at the anti-American morality of it all while simultaneously offering pardon to the culpable and the CIA can say of its barbarism  the ?programme had shortcomings?.

Salmond still manages to shake up his critics
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
7 Dec 2014 at 1:53pm

Analysis by Thomas Connolly

Whatever your opinion of Alex Salmond - and there are few people with no opinion - his every move continues to fascinate supporters and critics alike.

The former First Minister confirmed the worst-kept secret in Scottish politics earlier today when he told supporters at a SNP rally in Ellon that he intends to stand as the SNP candidate for the Westminster seat of Gordon in the UK General Election next May.

Labour figure predicts 'damage limitation' strategy
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
6 Dec 2014 at 10:35am

By Newsnet Scotland Reporter

The new Scottish Labour leader faces two "damage limitation" elections at UK and Scottish levels until a hoped-for recovery in fortunes at the end of the decade, according to former leading party figure Steven Purcell.

Purcell, Glasgow City Council leader until his abrupt exit from politics in 2010, believes that the "anointed" leader - Jim Murphy MP - will see his party lose Westminster seats in next year's UK General Election, followed by a third SNP victory in Holyrood in 2016.

'How The BBC Stole The Referendum' - book
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
6 Dec 2014 at 3:53am

How The BBC Stole The Referendum is a book currently being written by GA Ponsonby, founder of Newsnet Scotland.

Ponsonby, a fierce and consistent critic of the BBC's role during the referendum campaign, has pulled together his critique of the corporation, and the influence he believes it had on the final vote. It is a view shared by many Yes campaigners.

Here Newsnet Scotland reproduces a late draft of the opening chapter. Its author is raising funds to publish the book by April 2015: in time of the UK general election, where the BBC's coverage will be under intense scrutiny once again. Details are at the bottom of the page.

'Austerity has failed' - SNP
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
3 Dec 2014 at 9:49am

By a Newsnet Scotland Reporter

George Osborne's Autumn Statement demonstrates that the UK Government's austerity measures have failed since 2014, according to SNP deputy leader Stewart Hosie MP.

After the election in 2010 the Tories promised that debt would begin to fall as a share of GDP by 2014/15: that the current account should be in balance by 2015/16 and that public sector net borrowing would fall to £20 billion in the same year.

The demonisation of political protest
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
3 Dec 2014 at 2:52am

By GA Ponsonby

Three SNP councillors are in the news today after they filmed themselves symbolically burning a copy of the Smith Commission report.

The councillors said they were expressing their frustration and anger that pledges of more powers given by the three pro-Union parties prior to the independence referendum were not reflected in the commission?s recommendations.

A trip to Fantasy Island with the Telegraph's man in Scotland
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
1 Dec 2014 at 4:51pm

Review by Thomas Connolly

Gordon Brown's departure from Westminster politics -- strung out like one of his many pre-Budget off the record briefings -- was finally confirmed today, amidst media coverage akin to the death of a minor Royal and the familiar crocodile tributes from his peers.

The news -- for reasons unknown spun out for more than a week that just happened to coincide with the publication of the hollow conclusions of the Smith Commission -- followed the publication of a remarkable referendum memoir from one of the Yes campaign's most outspoken critics, the gutteral Telegraph hack Alan Cochrane.

Sturgeon spells out economic priorities
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
1 Dec 2014 at 11:08am

By a Newsnet Scotland Reporter

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today placed the strengthening of the Scottish economy at the heart of the Cabinet?s agenda at a speech before business leaders.

The Scottish Government?s Programme for Government, set out last week,  included a promise to extend the Small Business Bonus Scheme for the lifetime of the next parliament if the SNP is re-elected. This year Scottish Government rates relief will help two out of every five business properties to the tune of £600 million.

Plans to establish a Scottish Development Bank to support high growth firms were also announced, along with funds to support the building sector by adding £30 million to the £100 million already allocated to the Help to Buy scheme.

A Big Boy Did It ?
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
29 Nov 2014 at 5:55pm

Commentary By GA Ponsonby

The National is set for an indefinite print run.  The first daily newspaper to back independence for Scotland sold well during its five day trial.

Newsquest, the company that owns the Herald and the Sunday Herald, hopes to reap the obvious business reward that was awaiting the first publisher to create a product that the 1.6 million Yes voters would support.

All hail the Stupid Party
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
27 Nov 2014 at 12:31pm

By Derek Bateman

The chorus of whines is alive in the shires of England, and in Scotland the sound of deflating bagpipes can be heard. If the drones could fashion a dirge it would be Smith?s Retreat from Devo Max.

God, but it?s embarrassing for old Scotland to have such a gang of spivs and chancers picking over her entrails to see what?s worth keeping and what can be safely consigned to the bin.

My own lament is simple: Why, in Heaven?s name, didn?t we have the courage of our forebears and bestow on our country what is rightfully hers ? sovereign independence.
