The meaning of devo-max
by Rev. Stuart Campbell
7 Nov 2014 at 9:37am
As the Smith Commission continues its fundamentally pointless and impossible deliberations, in which it’s expected to digest and consider many thousands of submissions (including hundreds of detailed ones from political organisations and “civic Scotland”) in around three weeks, the Scottish and UK press is still casually and inaccurately tossing around the term “devo-max”. There seem to […]

Slim pickings

7 Nov 2014 at 12:00am
When we commissioned our latest poll, the candidates for the Scottish Labour sort-of leadership hadn’t yet been finalised. In fact, we’re not even sure whether the post of deputy “leader” was up for grabs at that point, with Anas Sarwar having said that he had no intention of stepping down, shortly before stepping down. But in […]

Jim Murphy says he will repeal the anti-sectarianism legislation if he becomes First Minister.  Scottish Labour's saviour in waiting has vowed to "scrap the Football Act right away." if Labour wins the 2016 Scottish election.

Murphy's announcement was reported in a manner that suggested it was a novel policy statement from the Labour MP.  It was splashed on the front pages of both The Herald and Scotsman.

SNP and indy poll boost spells doom for Miliband
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
2 Nov 2014 at 10:36am

By a Newsnet Reporter

Outgoing First Minister Alex Salmond said today that Scottish Labour would continue to pay the price for working within the Better Together campaign, after significant opinion polls indicated the SNP in a significant lead for Scottish seats in the UK General Election.

Over many years, received wisdom has been that Scots tend to vote for UK parties at Westminster. But two polls show the SNP in big leads over Labour, as the latter grapples with the task of electing a new leader in Scotland.

Better Together: arisen with a new cause

Murphy's launch backed by the party machine
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
1 Nov 2014 at 2:26pm

Commentary by Hugh Kerr

Jim Murphy launched his leadership campaign on Saturday morning in the somehow appropriately named King Khalid Building of the Surgeons' Hall, Edinburgh.

Older readers will remember King Khalid was the King of Saudi Arabia, responsible for the biggest-ever arms deal between the UK and any foreign government. It was a deal which British Aerospace gained by extensive bribery of Saudi officials.

30 Oct 2014 at 5:33pm

  Commentary by Hugh Kerr

There must have been some interesting discussion at the "gala" Labour dinner in Glasgow this week, and the placement of guests certainly must have been tricky!

Still, since all the seats are being paid for no doubt by wealthy business sponsors, maybe it won't be such a problem!

What awaits Jim Murphy and Labour in Scotland?
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
30 Oct 2014 at 2:38pm

Commentary by G.A.Ponsonby

So, if Jim Murphy is the favourite to lead the Labour Party in Scotland.  He?s a shoe-in if the media is to be believed.

That may be so, but has Jim got what it takes to bring the warring factions together, or is his reputation as a big-hitter more a product of a fawning Scottish media taken in by the illusion it helped cultivate?
