Phoning it in
by Rev. Stuart Campbell
29 Sep 2013 at 4:47am
The strain of keeping up a three-year campaign of fearmongering and bile is starting to tell on the stout media defenders of the Union. This week the Telegraph’s blustering “Scottish Editor” Alan Cochrane flopped out a particularly limp effort on the subject of the scare du jour, an independent Scotland’s defence. As far back as I can recall, I haven’t believed in anything. I’ve had no over-riding passion for change, I’ve felt jaded and disconnected from the establishment, from the institutions. One thing we noticed over the last week or so was the near-total lack of campaigning on the streets of Scotland’s cities and towns, from either side. We’re genuinely baffled by Ed Miliband’s big conference showstopper announcement this week that a Labour government would freeze people’s utility bills for a year and a half. Channel 4′s Fact Check is extremely sceptical that it can be done at all. The energy companies are predictably furious and making all manner of dire threats. But [...]

Who will fill a coward?s grave...
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
28 Sep 2013 at 9:53am

  By Derek Bateman

We learned two things today.  One, that David Cameron is a coward.  Two, that the No campaign isn?t nearly as sure of itself as it likes to pretend.

The latter is the more significant because it could have a lasting impact as Scots realise -all Scots- that the Unionist  champion hasn?t the stomach for the fight.  He says he has of course, but here in turning down a televised debate, is proof positive that Cameron?s clever words cannot be trusted and when presented with a challenge, he will blink and back down.

The Independence Debate is not a Non-Event but Changing Scotland
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
29 Sep 2013 at 5:10am

By Gerry Hassan

How often have you heard it said: the independence referendum is a non-event and as boring as paint drying?

This has become the uncontested view of part of mainstream Scotland and many in public life and the media. Last week 'Newsnight Scotland' anchor Gordon Brewer stated as fact that the whole thing was 'dull as dishwater', while others regularly pronounce that it is 'turning off voters', 'deadening' and 'never-ending'.

Codification of laws and treaties in an independent Scotland
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
28 Sep 2013 at 8:53am

  By Mark McNaught

Among the many opportunities offered by independence, perhaps the most important for creating a more egalitarian society is a complete re-codification of the legal system into a comprehensible, accessible, relevant, and applicable corpus of laws. Laws should be clear and understandable to all, so that they can be correctly abided by and not exploited.

Ed's no red on fuel poverty
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Lynda Williamson)
27 Sep 2013 at 2:27pm

By Colin Fox

Ed Milliband's announcement this week that a future Labour Government would cap energy bills for 20 months has sent the right wing press into a shiver as they flaunt the notion he is a 'socialist'.

But the rest of us are well aware he is simply doing what Labour does most, vent the anger of ordinary people without offering any meaningful solution to their problems, in this case soaring energy bills and falling livings standards.

Pensions will be more secure in an independent Scotland
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
25 Sep 2013 at 1:23pm

  By Rachel Holmes

Earlier this week the Scottish Government published the latest in a series of papers providing detailed information on the future of an independent Scotland. The topic was the future of pensions.

One of the most significant public policy challenges for any developed country today, including the UK, is the funding of state pensions.

The Fear Factor - Part 4: Mean Scotland Syndrome
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
26 Sep 2013 at 3:05pm

The world's a scary place: terrorism, climate change and Tony Blair, have all served to destabilise a world in which everyone is out to do bad things to each other.

This vision of the world is of course a by-product of the way that modern news media operates.  In Scotland, where everyone gets murdered at some point in their life, it?s even more frightening.

Dateline: September 19 2014 - the day after a No vote

Today I?m offering a glimpse of the future...What will happen on the morning of September 19, 2014? This version is written by a guest columnist, Simon Heffer* of the Daily Mail and is in the style of him filing his copy after Scotland voted No.

SCOTS CHICKEN OUT WITH NO VOTE?PREPARE FOR THE BILL, ENGLAND

Dateline: September 19 2014 - the day after a Yes vote
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
25 Sep 2013 at 3:24pm

By Derek Bateman

For the media camped outside the government offices at St Andrews House there was a early reward just after 7 am when the First Minister arrived grinning and carrying a sheaf of papers.

He held them up: ?Messages from 20 different countries around the world,? he declared. ?They came in overnight. Each one congratulating the Scots and saying: Welcome to the club of Nations? He turned at the door, looked at the cameras and said in a serious voice: ?The Independence Project starts today.?

Trade unionists should vote yes
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Lynda Williamson)
23 Sep 2013 at 5:21pm

By Paul Holleran [NUJ Scottish Organiser, writing in a personal capacity]

There are few issues that cause so much anger and frustration to trade union activists than the Thatcherite anti-trade union laws.

My own union suffered earlier this month, following a legal challenge against our ballot for industrial action.  Our dispute against Newsquest is to challenge their right to make compulsory redundancies on statutory redundancy terms, a fight which can only be described as a basic trade union function.

Scottish Independence - Just why are Scots so poorly informed?
by contact@newsnetscotland.com (Online Editor)
22 Sep 2013 at 5:16pm

  By G.A.Ponsonby

It's the new referendum tag-line - the undecided voters need more information.  The independence debate is all about point scoring we are told and both sides have to "do more" in order to up the standard of debate.

Well, I agree with the sentiment in part, the Scottish electorate - aside from the political anoraks - are indeed poorly informed.  But just whose fault is it?
